The catagorization below is lifted directly from "A Checklist of Islamic Coins, Second Edition" by Stephen Album. The AH prefix on the dates stands for Anno Hegirae. The Islamic Era year AH 1 is equal to the western year 622 AD, the year Mohammed fled from Mecca to Medina (on July 15th). Based on the lunar year, it is 11 days shorter. To (roughly) calculate an AH date from the AD, subtract 622 and then add 3%.

Please see the Islamic Coins Group home page.
There is a wealth of information: the list itself, a links page, Jim Farr's bibliography of Islamic references and an online magazine, 'as-Sikka,' just to name a few.

Fascinating, not only for the use of images (there are usually no images on Islamic coins), but also for the Classical Greek, Roman, Christian, and astrological motifs.
