Note: This coin may have been struck during Shapur II's campaign against the Kidarites. He spent the winter of 356 - 357 AD in Kabul and produced a series of coins with both large and small crescents in front of the bust. Possibly representing some astronomical/astrological event?
Gobl V/8 issue: With double obverse and reverse borders
Shapur II (309 - 379 AD)
AE Unit
25 mm.
7.79 gm.
Gobl SN V/8/4; Gobl Kushan

Die position=3h
Obverse: Bust right; double border.
Reverse: Altar without attendants; double border. Struck over earlier issue.
Don't pull your hair out department: It's not always a picnic to list coins using Gobl's system; there is, unfortunately, little provision for coins that fall outside his catagorization. For Shapur II, the numeral 8 represents a type with a double reverse border [and a typical altar and attendants scene, Gobl's 'Basic picture 3'], 9 represents those with a triple reverse border and a similar scene, 10 is a triple border with an altar only reverse ['Basic picture 4'], 11 is an altar only reverse but with a single border (and an added symbol on the altar column). Is the above coin an 8 or a 10? Does the number represent the number of borders or the type? I think this would have to be an '8' (double reverse border) but with the 'Basic picture 4' reverse.
